What is the reactant in the elephant toothpaste reaction?
Hydrogen peroxide
What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?
A machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and (impractically) overly complicated way
Dr. Millan was CEO and president of what institute?
California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)
What is the kidney's purpose? (name two functions of the kidney)
filtration system for your body, controls amount of substance in your blood, controls blood pressure, helps produce red blood cells
What are biofabrics made of?
Natural polymers (e.g. sodium alginate)
Define reactant, catalyst, and product
Reactants: undergo change, Products: resulting substances, Catalyst: speeds up reaction
Who was Rube Goldberg?
A cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor who created famous cartoons making fun of certain machines
What is a stem cell?
Stem cells are cells with the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body, giving them the ability to perform as a repair system.
Is the kidney a part of your excretory, circulatory or respiratory system?
The excretory system
How did glycerin affect the biofabrics we made?
It acted as a plasticizer making the fabric smoother, softer, and more flexible
What are the products of this reaction? What type of reaction does that make this?
Water and oxygen, so it's a decomposition reaction (1 reactant, 2 products)
Name three out of the six "simple machines"
Possible answers: wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, pulley, screw, wedge
What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine, also known as stem cell therapy promotes the repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells.
Where does urine production occur?
Renal lobes
Name common types of fabrics that are detrimental to the environment
fabrics made of synthetic fibers (polyester, nylon, spandex) and natural fibers (cotton, silk, wool)
How does dish soap function in this reaction?
As the hydrogen peroxide breaks down, the produced oxygen tries to escape the beaker. It is trapped by the soap, creating oxygen-filled bubbles
Which band famously uses a Rube Goldberg machine in their music video?
OK Go
True or false: stem cells are unspecialized, meaning they can do every function in the body
False: being unspecialized means that stem cells cannot perform specific functions in the body, but they can become different types of specialized cells and thus have the potential for different function
What hormone produced by the kidney regulates blood pressure?
Renin
What textile tests did we perform to produce qualitative data on our biofabrics?
We tested for torsion strength (twisting the fabric), tensile strength (ripping the fabric), and quality (sewing test)
What is the catalyst of this reaction and how does it function? (Bonus 100: what kind of reaction is this?)
Yeast contains the enzyme catalase which speeds up the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Bonus: exothermic

How does CIRM's current research contribute to treatment of sickle cell disease?
Current treatements for sickle cell disease involve transplanting stem cells from an individual producing healthy red blood cells to a an individual with sickle cell diease. However, this type of treatement can have risky and fatal side effects, so it not often implemented. Current research is working to modify a patient's own stem cells to produce healthy blood cells, avoiding the risks of transplants.
Name five parts of the kidney
Possibilities: calyx, hilus, renal artery, renal capsule, renal copuscule, renal cortex, renal lobe, renal medulla, renal papilla, renal pelvis, renal pyramid, renal vein, ureter
The textile industry makes up what percent of global carbon emissions?
10%, 1.7 million tons of CO2/year
