Difficult Situations
A student says a professor is making inappropriate comments towards them, how do you respond?
Make sure the student is okay, tell your PLC, advise them to reach out to the Dean of the college and Ombuds
A student says their roommate doesn't keep their room clean, how do you respond?
Advise the student to try and talk to their roommate about this and remind them about the roommate agreement. Also suggest talking to the RA.
A student says they have terrible time management, how do you respond?
Tell the student to schedule an appointment with Academic Coaching. Mention that they will have a refresher on time management in LC.
A student says they are experiencing COVID symptoms, how do you respond?
Advise them to self-isolate and seek out testing centers. Provide them with resources to on campus students.
A student is feeling very homesick, how do you respond?
Encourage student to call home and talk to family a few days a week. Also make sure student has friends to talk to on campus to help them get over their homesickness.
A student lets you know that they witnessed a crime on campus, how do you respond?
Tell student to contact UCPD and let your PLC know.
A student says they haven't had a conversation with their roommate the whole semester, how do you respond?
Encourage them to invite their roommate to lunch or some other activity. Talk to the RA if this situation makes them uncomfortable.
A student is struggling to adjust to the online format, how do you respond?
Advise them to reach out to Academic Coaching. Also give them your own tips of how you manage online classes.
A student's roommate tests positive for COVID and they are freaking out, how do you respond?
Advise the student to disinfect their room and get a test immediately while isolating. Give them resources to on campus students.
A student tells you they never leave their room and feel like they don't belong at UC, how do you respond?
Offer them support. Encourage them to use CampusLink to find ways to get involved on campus.
A student tells you they have been bullied constantly by classmates throughout the semester, how do you respond?
Talk to student to find out more about the situation. Tell them to reach out to the professor of the class where the bullying is occurring. Contact Ombuds.
A student says their roommate stole some of their things, how do you respond?
Tell the student to contact their RA to assist with confronting the roommate
A student says they are struggling to get grades better than B's and they are frustrated, how do you respond?
Tell them to reach out to their professors and attend office hours. Encourage SI sessions and Peer Tutoring.
A student's roommate is not being safe with COVID and going to packed bars and huge parties, how do you respond?
Encourage the student to talk to their roommate about their concerns. If this doesn't work, tell the student to reach out to their RA.
A student is having severe anxiety with online classes during COVID, how do you respond?
Offer support to the student. Let them know of resources such as CAPS and Academic Coaching.
Trigger Warning: suicide
A student tells you they have been having suicidal thoughts, how do you respond?
Comfort the student and let them know you are there for them. Remind student you are a mandatory reporter. Remind student of resources to assist with their thoughts. Tell PLC
A student says their roommate is having people over when they don't feel comfortable with it, how do you respond?
Tell student to talk to their roommate about communicating more. If they don't listen, talk to the RA.
A student has not been attending any classes, how do you respond?
Make sure everything is okay with the student. If not, refer them to CAPS and offer support. If everything is okay, remind student college is important and to take it seriously. Point them towards Academic Coaching.
A student tests positive for COVID and is feeling depressed in their isolation dorm, how do you respond?
Encourage student to call and talk to friends and family as much as they can. Tell them to schedule an appointment with CAPS if necessary.
A student has seemed very distant during your one on one, how do you respond?
Lightly bring up a conversation. Let them know you are there to help if needed. Give them resources such as CAPS.
Trigger Warning: sexual assault
A student confides in you that they have been sexually assaulted, how do you respond?
Comfort the student and make sure they are okay, let them know you are a mandatory reporter and walk them through the steps of what choices they have. Tell PLC
A student says they got into a fist fight with their roommate, how do you respond?
Ask if they are okay. Tell them to contact their RA to diffuse the situation. Also point them to Ombuds.
A student is failing all of their classes, how do you respond?
Tell the student to schedule an appointment with Peer Tutoring. Also let them know there will be a study skills day in LC to help. Make sure they reach out to their advisor.
A students' loved one passes away from COVID, how do you respond?

A student is feeling very depressed and is unmotivated to do anything, how do you respond?
Comfort the student and make sure they are okay. Let them know you are there for support. Tell student about resources such as CAPS.
