What must staff do every day when a child is dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon?
Sign them in and out.
What is the bus loading procedure?
1. 1 staff should board the bus and check the condition (report anything to bus driver). Stay on Bus.
2. 1 staff at door to direct and count the children...HEAD COUNTS!!
3. Once all on bus attendance (face match the children). One more head count before you leave.
4. Staff should not sit together...spread out throughout the bus. One in back seat, one in front seat, one in middle. All others spread out. STAY ALERT!
5. Sing/Play Games with kids if they become loud/restless.
6. One staff should get up occasionally to walk up and down aisle.
What three thing do you need when you move from one area to another at the program (ex. from the gym to the cafeteria)?
1. Have a list of kids in your group (1:13 ratio)
2. Make sure you have a first aid kit
3. Have a cell phone handy

What is the bus exiting procedure?
1. Staff should exit one group at a time. Take attendance again once off the bus in a safe location.
2. Make sure children have ALL belongings/lunch
3. One staff does a final bus walk through to make sure no children are left behind and all belongings have been taken.
How do you properly supervise the children when in the gym, cafeteria or playground?
all staff should spread out throughout the room walking around and engaging with the children. Staff should not sit with just one child. All children should be visible to all staff. Staff should not have their backs to the children.
If your shift starts at 1pm, what time should you arrive at the program?
Between 12:45-12:55
Name at least 3 bus expectations
Keep hands and feet/body parts inside the bus
Everyone must remain seated
No eating/drinking (unless okay with staff/bus driver)
Pick up trash before leaving the bus
No electronics
What is Child Neglect?
the failure or inability to provide a child with adequate food, clothing, shelter, medical care, supervision, emotional stability or other essential care.
When should you have fire drills?
Twice a month (one in the morning and one in the afternoon using different exits).
What is required before giving a child medication of any kind?
a Medication Consent Form and Individual Health Care form completed by Parent and doctor.
What happens if a child gets separated from the group?
1. The child should remain where they are...they should not move.
2. One staff stay with children, the other staff immediately back tracks.
3. If child is not at last location, call security and lead Site Coordinator. All groups should be alerted.
4. If child is still missing, Call 911/Director/Parents
What should you do if someone from the public is bothering any of our YMCA children?
1. If you are in a public area, remove our kids from the area.
2. If you are on the playground at the school, bring the children inside
3. If yo are on a field trip and it continues, report it to an employee.
If your shift ends at 4pm, when should you leave?
As soon as you check in with the Site Coordinator and they say you are good to go.
What is the restroom procedure while on a field trip?
1. Staff must enter restroom BEFORE the children enter to be sure that the area is safe.
2. Staff must position themselves outside the restroom and wait for the children to exit
3. One child in rest room at a time
What is a Mandated Reporter?
someone who is legally required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to report any suspected abuse to the appropriate authorities. YOU are a Mandated Reporter!
How many hours of professional development do staff need annually?
20 hours
What are the two things required before a child can be released to an unfamiliar adult?
Photo Identification
Written Parent Permission
What happens after field trip is completed (before you board the bus to go back to the site)?
1. Make sure all children are present. Head count/face recognition and attendance.
2. Make sure everyone has all possessions
3. Sit with your group on the bus.
4. Remain alert
5. After children exit bus (say thank you to bus driver), one staff member does a final walk through.
How do you prevent sunburns?
Apply sunblock at least 15-30 minutes prior to going outside. Reapply frequently when outside. Help children that need assistance.
What is the proper time frame to request time off?
At least 2- weeks notice

Every 2-3 minutes
What are some examples of emotional/mental abuse?
shaming, humiliation, cruelty

What two things must be done if a child has an accident/injury?
1. Complete an Accident/Injury Report form
2. Notify Parent
Give 3 examples of appropriate physical/verbal interactions and Give 3 examples of inappropriate physical/verbal interactions.
Appropriate: Side hugs, pats on the shoulder or back, handshakes, high-fives and hand slapping, verbal praise, pats on the head when culturally appropriate, touching hands, shoulders, and arms, arms around shoulders, holding hands with young children (in escorting situations), positive reinforcement, appropriate jokes, encouragement, and praise.
Inappropriate: Full-frontal hugs, kisses, showing affection in an isolated area, lap sitting, wrestling, piggy back rides, tickling, allowing a child to cling to an employee’s or volunteer’s leg, any type of massage given by or to a youth, any form of affection that is unwanted by the youth or the staff or volunteer, compliments relating to physique or body development, touching bottom, chest, or genital areas, name-calling, discussing sexual encounters or in any way involving youth in the personal problems or issues of staff and volunteers, secrets, cursing, off-color or sexual jokes, shaming, belittling, derogatory remarks, harsh language that may frighten, threaten or humiliate youth, or derogatory remarks about the youth or his/her family
If a child takes medication, how should you administer it and how should you store the medication? What do you do after you administer meds?
1. Look at the bottle, make sure it has the child's name and make sure the medication and dosage matches the IHCP. Watch the child swallow the pill, if any question, ask the child to open his/her mouth, lift up their tongue and then cough. Lastly, document in the med log. If a child is absent, please make sure you put they are absent on the med log.
What is the proper time frame to call out sick for your shift?
At least 2 hours prior to the start of your shift. You should always try to find coverage before you call out.
