According to the text, it states, "every one of my sisters stopped eating, stared, and then smiled at me. Their joy was evident in the way they nodded and grinned..." (McCall 107).

The excerpt produces the effect of suspense because we as the reader know about La Llorona's warning to remain pure hearted, however, the other Garza sisters are unaware of this and continue to make fun of Cecilia.
Provide an objective summary of Summer of the Mariposas, Chapters 1-9.
The Garza sisters Odilia, Juanita, Velia, Delia, and Pita are all at the Rio Grande swimming around and when all of a sudden they find a drowned man named Gabriel Perdido. After a few moments of arguing the sisters, decide to take the man back to his family all the way in Mexico. On their way, Odilia runs into a problem, two kids are about to run off the cliff. Odilia tries to save them and take them back to their mother but couldn’t. Odilia then finds out the mother is La Llorona and she arrives to help Odilia on her journey and gives her an ear pendant that will help her on the way. On their journey the sisters find themselves in problems at the border but thankfully the ear pendant gets them out of trouble of getting caught. The girls arrive at the dead man’s house and find it bad timing to be there as it was during a quince. The girls stayed the night answering questions and resting and in the morning they left for their grandmother’s house. The girls are labeled as missing and continue their journey where their car broke down and came across a lady named Cecilia. Cecilia was a witch who drugged the girls but La Llorona came to give Odilia a cure which she used for her siblings as well. As the girls tried to escape they had humiliated and angered Cecilia causing her to summon her children from the dark and evil, the girls in fear ran for their lives.
