What are three types of heat related illness? Describe each of them. Which is the most severe? What should you do to help the person in each illness?

1. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses large amounts of water and salt through excessive sweating. Signs include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, and heavy sweating.

2. Signs of heat cramps include muscle spasms, pain, usually in abdomen, arms, or legs.

3. Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat-related illness. Signs include confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that may result in death! Call 911 immediately.

  • Have person rest in shady, cool area
  • Encourage them to drink water or other cool beverages
  • Loosen clothing, remove outer clothing
  • Fan air on person; cold packs in armpits
  • Wet worker with cool water; apply ice packs, cool compresses, or ice if available
  • Stay with person until help arrives

Give reasoning behind closed toe shoes as a necessary dress code policy.

Shoes protect the feet from equipment that may be dropped accidentally, wearing athletic style shoes prevents slipping, and protect against spreading bacteria.

A child is having a seizure in the pool. What do you do?

Here are steps to follow if someone is having a seizure in water and they have a change or loss of consciousness:

  • Support the person in the water with the head tilted so the face and head stay above the surface
  • Call for help and remove the person from the water as quickly as possible.
  • Do not restrain the person unless this is needed to get the person out of the water safely.
  • Check to see whether the person is breathing. If not, begin CPR immediately.
  • If breathing is normal, turn person on their side and hold them in side-lying position until they recover.
  • Call an ambulance. Even if the person appears to be fully recovered, he or she should have a full medical checkup. Inhaling water can cause lung or heart damage.

When do you stop performing CPR?

1. You see an obvious sign of life, such as breathing.

2. An AED is available and ready to use. Have a 2nd person work the AED while you continue CPR.

3. Responder or EMS personnel take over.

4. Too tired to continue

Give reasoning for prohibiting excessive altered shirts such as: crop tops, open back tank tops, cutoffs with chest and back showing, sports bras, etc..

Tops that cover the mid-section and majority of chest/back area prevent MRSA, ringworm, etc. from being passed from skin to pad/mat contact

We operate under a philosophy of creating a safe and welcoming environment for all members and patrons.

Excessive altered shirts contribute to excessive sweat and moisture, which can damage equipment and contribute to virus transmission.

Can you use an AED device on someone who is pregnant? On an infant? On a person who is wet?

Yes.

Pediatric pads used if person is 8 years or younger. If no pediatric pads Standard (adult) pads may be used if pediatric pads are not available. If using standard (adult) pads, do not let the pads touch. (1 adult pad on front and 1 adult pad on back).

If the victim is lying in water, move him or her to a relatively dry area before using the AED.

Why do we have different directions on the track on different days?

As you go around the corners on a track or travel on a round track, your legs do not experience the same thing. The leg on the inside of the curve or corner is traveling a shorter distance and hitting at a slightly different angle than the leg on the outside of the curve. Over a long time, this can affect your ankles and leg muscles negatively. Switching up the direction on different days means you get more equal training on both legs if you run several times a week.
