What did God ask Samuel to do for the Israelites? Why was Samuel afraid?

The Lord asks Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint a new king for Israel. Samuel was afraid King  Saul would kill him when he found out. God asked Samuel to tell people he was going to offer sacrifice in  Bethlehem and wait for God to show Samuel the selected next king.
