What are in-situ strategies?

In-situ strategies are methods that are used on-site and provide strategies that conserve species and the environment. The solutions take place on natural habitat of the problem.

100

What are ex-situ strategies?

Ex-situ strategies are techniques that occur outside the situation's natural habitat.

100

What is bioremediation?

Bioremediation is a process where microorganisms, plants and other forms of life break down or consume contaminants to clean up a polluted site.

100

What are renewable sources?

Renewable resources are sources that aren't depleted and are continuously supplied. Renewable sources can be described as clean energy.

200

Where do in-situ strategies take place?

National parks, sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves.

200

Where do ex-situ strategies take place?

They take place off-site. Examples: laboratories, zoos, and aquariums.

200

What are some bioremediation strategies?

Land treatment for soil areas and ground water, biofiltration, bioreactors, and the use of microbes and plant species to clean soil and land.

200

What are some examples of renewable sources?

Wind power, solar power, geothermal power, hydroelectic power, tidal energy, hydro energy, and biomass energy.

300

What ways are in-situ strategies better than ex-situ strategies?

They don't remove organisms from their habitats, odds or recovery are higher, less expensive, requires less equipment and labor, and the methods can be used for larger populations.

300

What ways are ex-situ strategies better than in-situ strategies?

The conditions of the experiment can be carried out in smaller spaces, less expensive, the experimental conditions can be managed easier than in-situ, and the methods can be applied for smaller populations.

In-Situ vs. Ex-Situ Bioremediation Strategies

Ex-Situ: removing soil to treat it (through composting or lab experiments,) biopiles (removing and converting contaminants to low-toxicity byproducts,) landfarming (incorporating liners to control the spread of contaminants.)

In-Situ: leaving biological mechanisms in the soil like microbes to remove pollutants, phytoremediation (using plants to remove pollutants and contaminants,) bio-venting (adding oxygen to an unsaturated area.)

300

Why are renewable sources better than non-renewable sources?

They generate energy that don't produce greenhouse gases that can come from non-renewable sources. Renewable sources are also able to be reused without depletion unlike non-renewable sources.
