It was known as the Sacred Way, and was the only road in and out of Verdun that the Allies could use. It was running 24/7 with approximately 6000 vechiles using it a day. Almost 3/4 of the French army travelled on the road, and if any truck broke down, it was pushed off to prevent any traffic from building up.
