Why does NCA have a TAY group?

*hint* It is not to bore you

1. Part of your IEP includes transition goals which include a lot of topics that we cover in TAY group (for example: College information, introduction to resumes, and job applications).

2. We are about you and want to do the best we can to prepare you for your future.

True or False: Companies can ask you ANY question on a job application including your age, if you have a disability, and what religion you practice.

FALSE: Potential employers cannot ask these questions if they plan on basing their hiring decision off your answers.

Sometimes, potential employers might ask "get to know you" questions about your hobbies or if you have children; these questions are TECHNICALLY okay as long as they aren't basing their hiring decision on your answer.

What is a resume and why is it important?

A resume is a written document that includes someone's work history, education, credentials, and accomplishments.

A resume is important because it is usually the first thing a hiring manager looks at and is, therefore, the first impression they get of a potential employee.

True or False: It is a good idea to lie on your resume (ie. say you have certain certifications when you do not or say you have a degree when you don't)
FALSE: It is NEVER a good idea to lie on a resume. Even if you don't get "caught" in the lie during your interview process, the company may expect you to be capable of things that you don't know how to do.
300
True or False: People who attend college on average make more money than those who do not.

TRUE: College graduates, on average, earned 56% more than high school grads in 2015, according to data compiled by the Economic Policy Institute.

BUT some well-paying careers do not require a college degree and more school does not necessarily mean you will earn more money. YOU need to do research about the career you want and what kind of degree is required before you decide to invest in college.

True or False: You don't have to do anything in order to get financial aid.
FALSE: You need to APPLY for financial aid. This means you need to fill out the FAFSA, submit any documentation your college requests, check your email, be aware of deadlines, and COMMUNICATE with your college's financial aid office. There are TONS of different financial aid for college but there is NO hand-holding from colleges.
