You are welcoming a customer into the store who you recognize came to the event yesterday. They say, “I decided to come back!” How do you approach signing them in?

Ask what buyer they saw last time and then follow up with, “Would you like to see (said buyer’s name) again or whoever is available the soonest?”. From there, sign them in and click the  “repeat customer” box. You can put in the sign-in notes that they saw Ryan yesterday and would like to wait for him, or if they are good to see anybody.

A customer comes into the store with items to sell, but won’t show them to you when you ask. How would you handle this situation to ensure they have items for us?

If a customer comes into the store with items to sell but won’t show them to me, I’d say, “We'd like to take a quick look at what you brought in so we can make sure they’re items we buy. It helps us avoid wasting your time and makes the process smoother.” I’d add, “If you could show me the items, we can get things sorted out faster and make sure everything’s good to go.” If they still seem unsure, I’d let them know I’m here to help with any questions they might have.

A customer comes into the store with a single engagement ring and appraisal, and there is about an hour wait. What conversation could you have or actions could you take to help facilitate this situation?

Circle back with the customer after you have signed them in and anyone else waiting to be signed in, and engage them in a conversation about their piece. Let them know that our offer is fair, but that realistically, it may not be the amount of money they were hoping for, because our market for pre-owned engagement rings is limited (most customers would prefer to buy new), and that these pieces are typically priced based on the value of the diamond and the gold. If appropriate, show the ring to the buyer ahead of time so the customer doesn’t have to wait in line for a long time, or ask the buyer for a value so that you can float this ballpark estimate to the customer and make sure their time is respected.

You have a line of 10 customers waiting, and two buyers finished their transactions 10 minutes ago but are trying on jewelry and talking amongst each other. You can sense the growing frustration from the other customers as they notice the delay, and it's clear that the line is being affected by the slow pace. How can you politely let these two buyers know that others are waiting without sounding impolite?

A good way to approach the buyer(s): “I wanted to kindly let you know that we have about 10 customers waiting in line, and we’re trying to make sure everyone is taken care of. When you’re ready, just let me know and I’ll be happy to bring a customer to you." A good approach to the customer: “Thanks so much for your patience! One of the buyers is finishing up now, we’ll be with you in just a moment!"

138k

400

What does 'No Reserve' mean for an auction?

The seller has not set a minimum price, so the auction will end and the item will be sold at whatever the final bid is, even if it's very low. This is different from a traditional auction with a reserve, where the item won't be sold if the bids don't meet the seller's secret minimum price.

There is a line of 7 customers waiting, and an appointment walks through the door. The other customers were frustrated because they did not know we could make appointments. How do you handle this situation while keeping the customers in line, happy, and heard?

Explain to the customers waiting that they could’ve made an appointment before the event by calling the store, using the link on our social media ads, or using the link on the reminder emails we send out, but it was not required, and a majority of our business is from walk-in customers. It is always best to explain to the customers that there is an appointment on the books before an appointment arrives. Be upfront with the customers and let them know how many appointments we have when discussing wait times.
