Yes, instructors can add students as incomplete learners on their own (but this should be a temporary solution). A ticket must be created to add the student as a normal learner, which then gets escalated to ITS Administration Applications (NOT T&L).

(BFI9)When do course sites appear for instructors in Brightspace? What if the course site still does not show up for the professor, even though these conditions are met?

a.These are the conditions, it becomes available 60 days before the semester starts

b.Make sure to check that the instructor is put in as primary instructor of the course on e-Campus (course site shells only pop up for primary instructors)

(BFL2)Can a student join a site on their own through Brightspace?

Only if the course is on the Discover section in Brightspace (Brightspace Home Page and click on Discover from the Nav Bar). Otherwise, the professor can add them using the request to modify user form (located near the top).

(GS3)When submitting a trouble ticket for a Brightspace issue, what information needs to be included? If it is a cross-listed course what else needs to be included?


  1. Faculty/student full name
  2. Faculty/student IDs (and IDs of any other associated users mentioned in the ticket)
  3. Course name
  4. Course term & section number
  5. Course URL (Copy directly from URL place)
  6. Tool name (Assignments, Discussions, etc.)
  7. Item (include which assignment, forum, or test they are referring to)
  8. Error code (if applicable)

  1. Yes, but they need to be given affiliate status at URI. In order to access Brightspace you must have SSO credentials, which are only granted to users active within AD.
    1. To be given affiliate status, the user must have a USP-18 filled out for them. This is then submitted to Mary Beth Arnold (mbarnold@uri.edu)

URI faculty, staff, graduate and students both undergraduate acting as academic assistants who are currently NOT registered/enrolled in the course.

Yes, FT staff have an option in e-Campus to provide a user “Temporary Sakai Access”. Despite the name this will populate the user in AD for the specified time period, so they can access Brightspace.

(BFI6)How do you grade assignments/quizzes, and do they automatically show up in the gradebook?


  1. Enter Grades in Gradebook - University of Rhode Island (https://uri.makekb.com/entry/126/ ) (this is for entering grades in BS)
  2. If the assignment/quiz was set to have a score, the professor associated the assignment/quiz with a gradebook item, and set the assignment/quiz to automatically export grades, then yes it should automatically show up in the gradebook. If they need to modify it, they will have to do that in gradebook.

(BFI11)Does Brightspace allow cross listed sites? How is this set up?


  1. Yes. The instructor has to fill out this form (Request to Merge Course Offerings) to request that T&L merge the course sites.
    1. This can be done at any point in the semester, but it is important to note that only content for the destination course is kept. The content from sites being merged into the destination will not be kept.

(BFL4)Why might a student not be able to see their course on Brightspace, even though it appears on their e-Campus schedule?


  1. If they registered recently, it takes about 1-2 business days for the course to appear.
  2. The professor may have not activated their course yet. Or the start date that the instructor mandated hasn’t passed yet. Ask the student to confirm with another student in the course that they can see it.

(GS5) If a user puts their URI email address into Brightspace and it says that they do not have an account or to contact an administrator, what does this normally mean?


  1. This means they are not in the Brightspace feed, because...
    1. For students →  they are not currently enrolled in classes, they just enrolled that day or they’re trying to use their my.uri.edu email account
    2. For faculty/staff →  they are not officially listed as a faculty member

  1. Course sites are automatically created for you as long as the course is registered on e-Campus and the professor is noted as the instructor for the site.
  2. Project sites are created manually. This is located at the bottom right corner of the home page.

(BFI7)Can an instructor delete a Brightspace site?


  1. Project sites can be self reset/recycled/deleted. Course Tools → Course Admin → Course Reset → Select boxes for “Choose components to Permanently Delete” → Copy and Paste the Course Code. To change the name of project site: Course Tools → Course Admin → Course Offering Information → Edit “Course Offering Name”
    1. To delete the Project site entirely, a ticket needs to be submitted to the T&L team. However, ONLY the Project Site Owner can request to delete the project site.
  2. Course sites can’t be deleted, but an instructor can request to have the course reset if they want to start over from scratch with an empty course shell (for a current semester). Old course sites from previous semesters cannot be reset.
