In the Moment (Immediate Actions)

  1. Stay Calm & Separate: Get down to their level, intervene immediately, and separate the children to defuse the situation and prevent further harm.
  2. Comfort the Victim First: Attend to the child who was bitten to show the biter that attention isn't gained through biting. Offer comfort and first aid (wash the bite, apply a cold pack).
  3. Address the Biter Firmly: Use a calm, firm tone to say, " Biting hurts. We use our words to express ourselves" Avoid lengthy lectures; keep it simple and clear.
  4. Redirect & Offer Choices: Give the biter a choice, like helping comfort the other child or sitting quietly. Redirect them to a positive activity

Later (When Calm)

  1. Validate Feelings, Not Actions: Help the biter name their feelings (e.g., "You were angry because he took your toy") but reiterate that biting isn't okay.
