What is the cat?

In ancient Rome, statues and tributes were built to honor the city’s cats.  In 1929 the area where Julius Caesar was stabbed by Brutus, the Torre Argentina, was excavated. Because the area was below the street level it provided protection to the feral cats in the area, so during the excavation a population of feral cats took up residence and became as much of a tourist attraction as the ruins they call home. From 1929 to 1991 the cats living in the Torre Argentina area were protected and fed by a succession of cat ladies called “gattre”, one of which was a famous Italian film star.

In 1991 Italy enacted a law to protect the feral cat population of Rome by introducing a no kill policy toward the feral cats.
