Once. The LES is designed to lift the crew capsule away in the event of a launch emergency. It was deployed on Soyuz T-10-1 on Sept. 26, 1983, when the booster caught fire before the launch. The LES was able to carry the crew capsule clear seconds before the rocket exploded.
