What layer of Earth do we live on?
Crust
Divergent plate boundaries are when to plates move...
away from each other
At a convergent plate boundary, plates are moving...
Towards each other
At a transform plate boundary, the plates...
slide against each other
All of them, but they are weak at divergent plate boudnaries
What is the thickest layer of Earth?
Mantle
Where are divergent plate boundaries commonly found?
At the bottom of the ocean
What are the two major types of convergent plate boundaries?
1. continental-continental
2. continental-oceanic
What do you call the place between transform boundaries where the two plates meet?
Which plate boundaries can you find volcanoes at?
1. Divergent
2. Convergent oceanic-continental/destructive
What is the difference between the asthenosphere and the lithosphere?
Asthenosphere = the upper part of the mantle that moves like putty
Lithosphere = the outer, rigid layer of Earth that includes the upper upper part of the mantle and the crust
lithosphere
What does it mean for a plate to be subducted? What type of convergent plate boundary includes the subduction zone?
At a continental-oceanic convergent plate boundary, the oceanic plate is subducted, which means it gets pushed down into the mantle below the continental plate
Where is one place in the world where a transform boundary affects people?
Haiti, where they experience earthquakes!
Describe how an earthquake happens
Two plates get caught on each other while they are moving, building up energy until they have enough to jolt into place
Name 3 differences between the continental crust and the oceanic crust
1. continental = under land, oceanic = under ocean
2. continental is thicker than oceanic
3. oceanic is denser than continental
What is the specific crack between two plates at a divergent plate boundary called?
Rift Valley
What does it mean for a plate to be subducted? What type of convergent plate boundary includes the subduction zone?
At a continental-oceanic convergent plate boundary, the oceanic plate is subducted, which means it gets pushed down into the mantle below the continental plate
Draw a diagram of a transform boundary and label its 2 key features
1. Fault line
2. Crust
Which plate boundaries create mountains (not necessarily fold mountains specifically)?
1. Divergent- ridge is a mountain
2. Collision
3. Destructive- creates a volcanic arc, not technically mountains but includes crumpling of crust
Explain what a convection current is and what layers of Earth play a role in convection currents. You may draw a picture to explain if you like
Convection currents are the circular movement of materials caused by differences in heat and density. The outer core heats the lower mantle, causing that to rise to the surface (crust), where the materials cool and sink back to the lower mantle again.
Draw a diagram of divergent plate boundaries and label 3 major geographic features of it.
Plates should be moving away from each other and things that should be labelled are rift valley, mid-oceanic ridge, and oceanic crust
Draw a diagram of an oceanic-continental convergent plate boundary (destructive) and label the 5 key geographic features found there.
1. Deep-sea trench
2. Volcanic Arc
3. Oceanic crust
4. Continental Crust
5. Subducted plate or asthenosphere
Why are transform boundaries also sometimes called "conservative" boundaries?
Because they neither create nor destroy lithosphere
Name a unique geographic feature at each of the 4 types of plate boundaries
1. Divergent: Rift valley, mid-oceanic ridge, volcanic arc
2. Collision: fold mountains
3. Destructive, subducted plate, deep-sea trench, volcanic arc
4. Transform: Fault
