What do pharaohs mean to Ancient Egyptians?
Pharaoh means the head of Egypt’s government. The pharaoh was an absolute ruler. (That means the pharaoh had absolute, or total power.) Egyptians worshiped the pharaoh as a god. They obeyed the pharaoh's commands without question. The pharaoh appointed (chose) officials to help run the government. The highest officials were, called “viziers”. Under the viziers were thousands of lower officials, such as governors, mayors, judges, and tax collectors.
The pharaoh was seen as a connection between the world of the gods and the world of humans. The Egyptians thought that their pharaoh was almost superhuman and could control rainfall, flooding, crop growth, and also the health of the people. Because of this, they gave him their highest respect and honored him as if he were a god.
