What are the three types or classifications of development?
Economic
Human
Sustainable
Differentiate between weather and climate
Weather is the short-term or temporary state of the atmosphere, whereas Climate is the long-term or average weather condition of a large region for 30years.
The main difference is TIME
What are clouds?
Clouds are masses of tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere.
What are the two types or classifications of weather systems?
High Pressure and Low Pressure Systems
Name Two indicators of economic development and Two indicators of Human development
Economic:
GDP
GNP
Infrastructure
Human:
Life Expectancy
Education
Health Care
What are the 3 main climatic zones?
Tropical
Temperate
Polar
Explain how clouds are formed.
Water from the earth surface is evaporated (water vapour)
As it rises it cools. As the air cools, its ability to hold moisture is reduced.
The water vapour in the rising air condenses on dust particles or condensation nuclei, forming clouds.
It is held up by a rising current of air is called an updraught (also spelled updraft)
This line on a map connects points with the same atmospheric pressure at a given time or, on average, over a given period.
ISOBAR
Name the three main types of economic activity and an example of each
Primary- Fishing, Mining, Forestry
Secondary- Food Processing
Tertiary- Tourism
What are the layers of the atmosphere from the Earth's surface? And within which layer do weather and climate occur?
Troposphere- Weather and Climate occur
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Exosphere
What level are the following clouds:
Cumulus
Stratus
Cirrus
Cumulus- Low level
Stratus- Low level
Cirrus- High level
Explain THREE differences between a hurricane and an anticyclone
low pressure----- high pressure
air moves inward to the center------air moves outward
Hurricanes are formed in tropical regions-------- anticyclones are formed in temperate regions
Differentiate between Primary Economic Activity and Tertiary (give at least TWO differences)
Primary economic activity extracts raw material from the earth, which normally has the lowest economic value, whereas Tertiary is service based of a higher value.
Primary economic activity produced tangible products and Teritary intangible.
Explain how land and sea breezes occur and can influence the temperature of coastal areas.
Land heats up and cools faster than the sea due to its lower heat capacity. During the day, the land will have low pressure compared to the sea, which will have high pressure. The air will move from high to low, from the sea to the land. During the night, the sea would have retained heat and have a low pressure compared to the land. The air would move from land to sea, producing a cool land breeze. The diurnal temperature will be small as the cool winds will prevent temperature differences from being large.
Explain the formation of Convection rainfall.
The earth’s atmosphere is heated by the warming of the earth’s surface.
The air molecules that come in contact with the Earth’s surface, by means of conduction, are warmed.
Warm air expands, becomes less dense and rises. The further from the earth’s surface the cooler the air and the process of convection occurs.
Convection is the movement within a liquid or gas driven by differences in temperature.
As the air increases in altitude, temperature decreases, dew point is reached and condensation eventually occurs.
Cumulonimbus clouds are usually formed.
Explain three long-term negative effects of a hurricane and one positive effect
Negative:
Destroys property/infrastructure, disruption to the economy, and psychological trauma
Positive:
Distribute heat energy from the equator toward the poles
Using one reason for each, explain the importance of economic activity and sustainability. And rationalize which is most important.

What factor would mainly contribute to the high temperatures in the Caribbean and explain why?
Latitude. The Caribbean lies near the equator, where a greater concentration of heat on a smaller surface area compared to near the poles. The heat is dispersed over a smaller area near the equator, resulting in higher temperatures. The bulge of the Earth near the equator also creates less distance for the sun rays to travel, resulting in less scattering and dispersion of heat.
Explain the formation of relief rainfall
Relief rainfall occurs within mountainous areas that are affected by a dominant wind.
The Caribbean comprises of mountains formed as a result of folding and faulting.
The Northeast trade winds prevail in the region, bringing with it warm, moist air.
When the northeast trade winds come in contact with the windward side of the mountains within the Caribbean, air is forced upwards, cools, and condenses as the temperature decreases.
The air parcel will reach 100% relative humidity, and the excess water vapour condenses to form clouds.
Explain the four stages of the disaster management cycle
Mitigation: To reduce the risk of the disaster
Preparedness: Planning
Response: Reacting immediately or swiftly after the disaster
Recovery: to return to normal
