Although we've all seen old-timey shows where soldiers and pirates clean their wounds with whiskey, it's definitely not recommended.
No matter how cool it might look to pour a hard liquor onto an open cut, only an isopropyl alcohol of 70% or higher should be used to clean wounds.
You shouldn't use any type of alcohol to clean an open wound, it can cause tissue damage, which will take longer to heal. You should use clean water and a mild soap.
Shoe sizes differ based on their country of origin, but some systems are simpler than others.
Unlike US and UK shoe sizes, which are based on "barleycorns" (a unit of measurement equal to 1/3 of an inch), continental Europe just uses the centimeter measurement of the foot as the shoe size.
Continental Europe shoe sizes are based on the Paris points, a unit of measure equal to 2/3 of the centimeter.
What sort of security does your Wi-Fi network use?
Wi-Fi Protected Access, or WPA, is not as secure as WPA2, but it uses less processing power. The most secure option is Wired Equivalent Privacy, or WEP, which uses a fixed key encryption protocol.
WEP is in fact the weakest system and has mostly been phased out due to how vulnerable it is.
Having trouble studying before the Tesla's Club? Try the Pomodoro Technique!
Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the '80s, it originally used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to help maintain focus while working or studying. You set the timer for the standard pomodoro length of 35 minutes, and focus entirely on the task at hand. Once the timer rings, you get a 5–10 minute break before starting over.
After repeating a "set" of four pomodoros, you get a long break of 20–30 minutes!
Each pomodoro is typically 25 minutes. That way, you're only working hard for 2 hours before the long break.
Though we may have all grown up with the Food Pyramid, the new USDA recommendations are called "My Plate". It still has the six food groups (Fruits, Vegetables, Protein, Grains, Dairy, and Sugars), but instead of giving grains and vegetables the biggest section on the plate, the USDA now recommends making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, with a focus on whole fruits and varying your veggies.
The USDA recommendation got rid of sugars, fats and oils completely. It used to say "use sparingly", but now it's not even included.
If your shoes are made from canvas, nylon, polyester, or similar materials, you can throw them in the washing machine. You only need to remove the laces before putting your shoes in with some old towels to balance the load.
For the laces, either wash by hand or place in a mesh garment bag before putting them in the washing machine, or else they might get tangled in the moving parts.
Unless the care instructions say otherwise, remove and wash insoles separately. Machine washing your insoles can leave them waterlogged. Instead, you wash your insoles with a rag and some soapy water. Use a sponge to soak up as much moisture as possible, then sprinkle the soles with baking soda to deodorize and dry overnight.
When making a budget, the most common net income split is 50/20/30, where 50% goes to your rent/housing, 20% goes to savings, and 30% is left for your discretionary spending.
That 50% isn't just for rent (IN THEORY). It should cover all your monthly needs, including food, transportation, bills, etc. Rent should only be about 30% of your income.
Lost your voice after speaking too much on the Tesla's Club? Don't panic, there are a few ways to help get it back quickly.
The single best remedy is rest, so try not to speak, and only whisper if you have to. Otherwise, humidifiers and breathing in steam can help moisten your vocal cords, and gargling salt water can soothe inflammation.
You shouldn't whisper, but speak at a normal volume.
Whispering pulls your vocal cords tight, and causes extra strain. Speaking at your normal volume is better, but you should still rest.
When cooking chicken, it's not just the internal temperature that matters, but how long it maintains that temperature. That's why you should make sure chicken reaches 165°F (73°C) before taking it off the heat, because it has to stay at that temperature for at least one minute to be safe to eat.
You should take the chicken off the heat BEFORE it reaches 165°F (73°C) or else it will be extra dry. It only needs to be at 165°F (73°C) for less than 10 seconds for it to be safe to it.
Removing it at 155°F (68°C) would be fine if you let it rest for a few minutes because it needs to maintain that heat for about 50 seconds. It'll be safe to eat and much juicier.
Sewing a button back onto a shirt is a deceptively easy skill, but here are some tips to make it easier:
Cut a long length of string to give yourself room, double knot the end of the string to keep it from coming through the fabric, always keep the string taut as you move between button holes, and pass the string through each button hole between 6–8 times to ensure it stays on this time!
You shouldn't keep the string taut, or else the button won't be able to hold the fabric correctly. Instead, you can use a pin or a toothpick to hold the string out on top of the button, giving you enough space to make the button work. Then, you can wrap the string under the button to create a "shank", which allows the button to have a bit of space when the garment is buttoned.
If your car ever gets stuck on the road during a blizzard, stay calm!
Make sure to keep the windows and doors closed at all times, and run the motor for about 10 minutes every hour in order to maintain heat. After the snow stops falling, you can lift the hood of your car to indicate you need help.
You should keep the windows open whenever you're running the motor, to keep air fresh and stop you from getting carbon monoxide poisoning. If snow gets too high, you should keep the exhaust pipe clear as well.
The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth in the morning and in the evening for two minutes using a toothbrush with soft bristles. Brushing right after meals is also encouraged, as is flossing once a day. It doesn't matter if the floss is waxed, unwaxed, or mint.
You shouldn't brush immediately after every meal. The ADA recommends waiting at least an hour before brushing after a meal because there are some acids and enzymes in foods that, if you brush right after a meal, you will scrape away the enamel from your teeth.
If your recipe calls for baking powder (polvo para hornear), you can substitute it with baking soda (bicarbonato de sodio) by adding an acidic ingredient like cream of tartar (bitartrato de potasio) to the mix. This is because baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, but baking powder is sodium bicarbonate plus an activating acid.
The added acidity is also why baking powder is more effective at cleaning than baking soda.
Baking soda is more effective at cleaning than baking powder.
You'll actually get better results cleaning with baking soda because the acid in baking powder, plus the base of sodium bicarbonate actually neutralizes its reactivity.
Before rescuing a baby bird, you should check if it's a fledgling or nestling.
Fledglings have feathers, often fluffy, and should not be rescued unless in immediate danger or injured.
Nestlings typically have few or no feathers and are mostly pink and do need rescuing. Put on gloves to prevent your scent from rubbing on them, then place them back in the nest they fell from. If you can't find it, make an artificial nest and put it in the same tree.
It is highly recommended to wear gloves or use a towel when rescuing a bird to protect yourself from sharp beaks, talons, and potential diseases or parasites, but it's not beceause the human scent "rub on birds" in a way that causes abandonment; it's a myth that birds abandon their young after human touch because most birds have a poor sense of smell and are primarily concerned with disturbance, not scent.
When storing fine wine glasses, it's preferable to store them upside-down on a wine glass rack or in a special wine glass storage box. If a cabinet is your only option, you should store them upside-down to prevent dust build-up, with about a half-inch between each glass to prevent chipping and tipping.
If you're storing them in a cabinet, you should store them right side up because if you store them upside-down, it weakens the rim, which is the most likely place for them to get chips and breakage.
Whether it's from a wrestling match or an extremely intense Dance Dance Revolution session, muscle injuries are the worst. After the injury, should you ice it, or heat it up?
Turns out, both! You should ice your injuries for 20 minutes, followed immediately with a heat treatment. Heat can also be used on chronic conditions and regular aches and pains.
You shouldn't use heat on recent injuries. As it can make the inflammation worse. Unless you've been told otherwise by a medical professional, try to use ice for the first three days after the injury.
A general rule of thumb is warm up, cool down. Apply heat before an activity and use ice afterward.
Newborn babies have a number of physiological differences that distinguish them from slightly older babies.
Newborns don't cry tears until a few weeks after birth, can't breathe through their mouth until a month after birth (except when they're crying), can't taste salt until five months, and, if they're girls, might even produce milk shortly after birth.
Babies can't breathe through their mouth until three to five months old (except when they're crying). That's why it's so important to keep the nasal passages of infants clear because that's the only way they can breathe.
We've all done laundry before, so surely you can recognize what the washing symbols on your clothes mean, right? For this question, I'll show you one of those symbols, and you'll have to tell us what it means.
If you ever need some references for how scary insects are, look no further than entomologist Justin Schmidt's sting pain index.
He self tested stings from insects, ranging from ants to centipedes, and gave each a number and a surprisingly poetic description, like "A robust, full-bodied wake-up call", for a Long-Waisted Paper Wasp, or "Caustic and burning, with a distinctly bitter aftertaste", for the Red Paper Wasp.
He only tested Hymenoptera, which include ants, bees, wasps, and sawflies, NOT the centipedes.
He tested 78 different species, and he passed way in 2023 (unrelated to insect stings).
Removing makeup can be a real pain, but according to dermatologists, there are some ways to make it a little easier without hurting your skin.
Using your hands instead of a washcloth can avoid irritating the skin, avoiding oil-based cleaners will keep your skin from becoming too oily, and micellar water does double duty in removing makeup and hydrating the skin.
Oil-based cleaners are fine. Using a non-oil-based cleaner can disrupt the oil production of your skin and result in overproduction of oil.
