100

Any natural substance, organism or energy that living things use.

Natural Resource

100

Give 4 examples of a natural resource.

Answer Vary.

Looking for: air, water, soil, wind, oil, petroleum, coal...etc

100

The process by which wind and water transport soil and sediment from one location to another.

Erosion

100

A naturally formed inorganic solid with a crystalline structure

Mineral

100

____________ is a fancy word for mixture.

Aggregate

200

The process which used or discarded materials are treated for reuse.

Recycling

200

What makes something a Renewable Resource?

A natural resource that can be used and replaced over a relatively short time

200

DOUBLE POINTS!

The breakdown of rock into smaller and smaller pieces.

Weathering

200

Solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms that is present throughout the mineral.

Crystals

200

_______________________ and _____________________ shape our planet.

Physical processes and human activities shape our planet.

300

The break down of rock into smaller pieces by physical means.

Mechanical Weathering

300

What is a Nonrenewable Resources ?

Natural resources that cannot be replaced.

300

What are the two different types of weathering? What is an example of each type?

here are two types of weathering: Mechanical weathering and chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering is when physical changes happen to rock. Wind for example can blow or move around rock often enough where a rough edge starts to become smooth. Chemical weathering is when the chemical makeup of the mineral changes. This happens when iron is left outside (in the air) for too long and turns into iron oxide; or when a fence starts to rust.

300

Four ways to identify a rock/mineral:

Color

Luster

Streak

Cleavage and Fracture

300

Miss Wasserman will show a picture.

Answers Vary.

400

A chemical reaction in which an element combines with oxygen to form an oxide.

Oxidation

400

DOUBLE POINTS!

Why cant nonrenewable be replaced?

Nonrenewable reasources can not be replaced because once the resource is used up, there is no more.

400

Describe the two ways that glaciers erode.

Glaciers erode land by plucking and abrasion. Plucking occurs when a glacier moves over a fractured rock surfaces and loosens and picks up large pieces of rock. Abrasion occurs when a glacier and its load of rock pieces move along and grinds away at the surfaces of earth.

400

Why doesn’t it go in a specific order?

The rock cycle has three different stages as opposed to three different steps because rocks can be located where ever. They aren’t like a butterfly, for example where it goes through different life stages. Rocks all have different location on Earth. Wind, water, human factors and other parts of erosion can factor in to where the rock goes next.

400

Short Answer:

How does ice expansion affect the of our roads?

Answers Vary

500

The chemical breakdown of rocks and minerals into new substances.

Chemical Weathering

500

What should we do to help prevent the extinction of nonrenewable resources?

Answers vary.

Looking for:

-recycling

-using other sources of energy

-using less

500

Is it possible to stop erosion?

Why not?

We are not able to stop erosion, it is something that happens gradually and over time. This is because the Earth is always moving.

500

Why is "color" not the best way to identify a rock/mineral?

Mineral comes in many different colors, because of that it is not a reliable indicator of a mineral’s identity.

500

Miss Wasserman will show a picture.

Explain what that is.

Answer Vary.
