There was a faraway look on his face that Aiden had never seen before. It was almost as if Aiden could imagine his dad as a kid. When it was summer and the smell of freshly cut grass lingered in the air, the taste of homemade lemonade was bitter but sweet, and sand warmed all day in the sun, until the glow of fireflies floated up into the night.

Aiden’s dad didn’t look sad, but it was clear he was remembering something he had once loved very much.

At first, Aiden didn’t understand what was going on. Then he did.

“Dad?” Aiden asked, putting his hand on his dad’s shoulder. “You had
a dog?”

“Not just any dog,” Aiden’s dad said. “A super dog.”

Spectacular Skins

David Shale/NPL/Minden Pictures

A ghost shrimp

The world is full of creatures with unusual skins and coats. Long tailed weasels grow white fur in the winter so they’re hard to see in the snow. Potoo birds’ feathers look just like the bark on the trees where they hang out to camouflage themselves from hungry monkeys. And chameleons change their skin color to attract mates and defend their territory.

Many other animals have sheer skin too, from butterflies to fish. A favorite here in the U.S. is the ghost shrimp. Many people keep the creatures in their fish tanks.

Just like a glass frog’s, a ghost shrimp’s body is as clear as crystal, so you can watch the food it’s eaten pass through its guts.

What did the author prove in this section?

Many animals have interesting skins. For instance, chameleons skin is cool because "chameleons change their skin color to attract mates and defend their territory". Also, ghost shrimp skin is cool because "their body is as clear as crystal". This shows different animals have unique and interesting skins.

Question: What kind of character is Roosevelt?

It takes me a second to realize that I’m still dancing.

And they’re all still laughing.

I finally force my feet to stop moving, and a second later, the tears begin building in my eyes. Roosevelt quickly scrambles out of his seat. “Want some popcorn?” He pulls me out of the row and up the stairs toward an exit.

“You OK?”

I keep my gaze down. There’s no way I can look at him right now. I’m afraid I’ll catch him shrugging, like I should pretend this is all a big joke.

But instead, he quietly says, “How about we find a bathroom.”

He offers to go inside with me, but I tell him I’d prefer to go in alone. I quickly enter the first stall, then lock the door behind me.

I wonder if it’s too soon to go home.

Roosevelt is a caring person and a good friend. He is a good friend because he wants to help the narrator. One detail is "Roosevelt quickly scrambles out of his seat". This shows he is getting up to help the narrator. Also, "he offers to go inside with me". This shows he wants to comfort his friends.

Find 2 details to support the claim.

Claim: People should not go to space.

OK, come back to Earth. Space travel might not be as thrilling as it sounds.

First of all, it’s expensive. The cheapest ticket is $250,000—for just a few minutes in space! And that space station visit? It will cost almost $60 million. You could take thousands of amazing Earth vacations with that cash.

Plus, just because space travel is expensive doesn’t mean it’s comfortable. You’d be crammed into a small cabin. And having no gravity would make daily activities tricky. Imagine eating lunch while your food tumbles through the air. Some astronauts even strap themselves to the toilet so they don’t drift away mid-pee. Ew!

Finally, space travel can be dangerous. Even a tiny problem with a ship can cause a serious accident. And mistakes do happen. Nearly 20 astronauts have died on space missions since the 1960s.

Space travel is expensive. For example, the text says "the cheapest ticket is $250,000 for just a few minutes in space"! Also, it is not safe. The text says, "even a tiny problem with a ship can cause a serious accident". This proves people should not go to space.

What is the theme?

Emperor: Children, show me what you’ve grown.

N2: His nieces and nephew push to the front.

Lan (boasting) : Uncle, look! My lilac bush is as tall as you.

Emperor: It is truly a wonder, to have grown that big in only a year.

Mei: Mine is a plum tree. I know how much you love plums.

Emperor: As do you, since you seem to have eaten all of them.

Jun: Uncle, look, my Venus flytrap is swallowing a fly! Works better than a fly swatter.

Emperor: Amazing, Jun, when I’ve never actually seen you make the effort to swat a fly.

N3: The Emperor’s face darkens as he moves through the crowd toward Ling.

Emperor: What about you, child? Have you nothing to show me?

Ling: Your Majesty, I beg you to forgive me. I planted, watered, and even read to my seed. But in the end, nothing would grow.

N1: The Emperor claps his hands together.

Emperor: Excellent! What is your name?

Ling (confused) : Sire, it’s Ling. But what is excellent? My plant didn’t grow.

Emperor: True. Yours alone did not. Which tells me that you are the only honest one among all these children.

N2: The Emperor points to Ling’s pot.

Emperor: Children, the seeds I gave all of you were boiled. They could not grow.

N3: The children gasp.

Emperor: What Ling has in her empty pot and in her heart is the most precious seed of all—the seed of honesty.

N1: The Emperor takes Ling’s hand.

Emperor: Ling, you have won the contest and will succeed me on the throne.

Always be honest.

Honesty is the best policy.

The truth is the most valuable thing.

Trust is earned through honesty.

Lying can lead to negative consequences.

What kind of person is the narrarator?

I can’t wait for my birthday party next month! To make things easy for you, I already have everything planned out. The food: pizza. The music: Ariana Grande. The activity: ice-skating. The rink can hold only 12 kids, so I’ll invite all the girls in my class except for Chloe, Izzy, and Alisha.

I know you’re going to say that I have to invite everyone. But I never hang out with those girls at recess or after school. They’ll understand why they’re not invited—just like I understood when Chloe didn’t invite me to her sleepover birthday. They probably wouldn’t even want to go to a party for someone they don’t really know.

Chloe is a selfish person. Chloe is selfish because she is excluding 3 girls from her class. One detail is, "I'll invite all the girls in my class except Chloe, Izzy, and Alisha". Also, the text says, "They'll understand why they're not invited".

What kind of person is Cara?

Cara Mailey tore open the package as soon as it arrived. Inside was a project that the 13-year-old from Northern Ireland had worked hard on for several months: a shiny blue tracksuit.

Cara tried it on and spun around. It fit like a glove!

The tracksuit is just one of the special garments designed by Cara for kids like her. Cara was born with a condition called achondroplasia (ay-kahn-druh-PLAY-zhuh). Achondroplasia causes a person to have short arms and legs.

But for Cara, that doesn’t mean she’s much different from most kids. “I’m really the same as everyone else, except for my appearance,” she says.

Cara is creative.

Cara is optimistic.

What kind of relationship does the narrator share with her brother?

I look around my room, which is a blur through my angry tears. Before Hakeem came home with us a month ago, it was perfect. The walls were painted exactly like I wanted: pink and gold. Now there are ugly marker  scribbles everywhere that won’t wash off. Baba promised to paint over them more than a week ago, but he still hasn’t done it.

Mama rushes in.

“It’s not so bad,” she sighs as she surveys my books dumped out of the bookshelves and all my LEGO creations smashed into pieces.

“It’s not your room,” I sniffle. “Why can’t I get a lock on my door?”

“We are not going to lock your brother out of any part of the house, Aleena. He has to learn.”

He has to learn. Hakeem gets a pass on everything because he’s 4 and doesn’t understand English, or because he’s never seen books or LEGOs before. Sometimes it feels like he hasn’t learned anything since we brought him to Virginia from the orphanage in Morocco.

They share a negative relationship.

N3: The next day, Papa visits the principal of the Westminster school. He returns home a short while later, upset.

Papa: It’s not a mistake. He says all Mexican American kids have to go to Hoover Elementary.

Mama: Why?

Papa: I kept asking him that. He just said, “That’s the way it’s done here.”

Aunt Sally: Hoover is much farther away. I heard teachers don’t want to work there.

Papa: This is not acceptable.

Dear Sky

Dear Sky,

Thank you for sticking around.

I’m a little trapped here, tied to ground by gravity,

in a state, a country, but you

are the true top of my room.

When I stare up, everything feels better.

You calm me down. When you are gray, I know you

are holding on to rain, doing your job. When you’re blue,

everyone loves you. So many styles of clouds

drifting quietly . . . best of all, you always change,

the way I change getting older.

Thank you for showing me how. In your own

mysterious way, I think you care. I want to belong

to everywhere, the way you do. Kids in Dubai,

Kenya, China, Australia, all know you.

You are the true world friend. Sky, I thank you

every day and night for connecting us.

I don’t need any money at all

to own your glory.

Love, Small Dot on the Earth

Be grateful
