What is an Architect?

A person who designs buildings and supervises construction.

100

What structure is used to hold up a sagging beam bridge?

Pillar

100

What shape of pillar is the strongest?

Cylinder

100

What shape pillar was the weakest?

Triangular

100

What shape is strong and used frequently in structures such as bridges and trusses?

Triangles

200
What is a beam?

A horizontal, sturdy piece of material spanning the opening or part of a building to support the roof or floor.

200

How does metal become rusty?

Exposure to water and air over a long period of time.

200

What is a Gusset?

A gusset is a triangular piece used to reinforce connections or joints to make them stronger.

200

What is the word the describes when something is being pulled tight?

Tension

200

Name 4 building materials

Plastic, wood, rubber, bricks, metal, etc.

300

What is a pillar?

A vertical Structure used to support buildings and bridges.

300

Explain how we reinforced the square and rectangle straw shape to make them stronger and more stable.

We added a crosspiece and reinforced the shape by creating triangles.

300

What is a curved structure spanning an opening usually supporting a load?

Arch

300

Are shorter or longer beams more stable and strong? Why?

Shorter beams because longer ones will begin to sag in the middle. The weight is distributed more evenly on shorter beams.

300

What material is waterproof meaning that it can not absorb water?

plastic

400
What is a truss?

A structure that supports a roof or bridge. Usually in the shape of triangles.

400

Explain what a push joint is.

Push joints are a type of joint used to connect hollow materials.

400
What is strength and stability?

Strength- something that is strong and can hold a load

Stability-something that is steady, firm, and can balance in place.

400

What shape of beam was the strongest? Why?

The triangular beam because the triangle distributes weight more evenly.

400

Do 4 small pillars or 1 large pillar hold more weight? why?

4 small pillars because they hold the corners of the books and so the weight is more evenly distributed.

500

What does the word framework mean?

The main structures in place that are essential to the building of a bridge or building.

500

Explain how a keystone or an arch bridge works.

An arch bridge works by having trapezoid shaped blocks leaning against each other without glue or a connecting substance. The weight from each block is transferred to the blocks beside it which allows the arch to hold weight.

500
Explain how a arch works.

An arch distributes the weight so the pressure gets put on the ends (bottom) therefore it will not collapse as easily.

500
What type of pattern in a brick wall is the strongest? Why?

Staggered wall because it interlocks with the pieces around itself making it one solid unit.

The stacked wall is basically columns that are not attached.

500

WHY IS THE CYLINDER PILLAR THE STRONGEST?

It distributes the weight evenly around the circles edge.
