What is a text feature?
Provides information that may not be in text itself.
What are some example of text features?
Diagrams, Heading, Subheadings, Title, Graphs, Illustrations, Photographs.
What is a title?
Tells what the text is ALL about.
Which non-fiction text feature shows the location that event took place?
Map
What kind of text provides details or characteristics about a topic? Some key words may include for instance, example.
Descriptive
What is the table of contents?
Lists the major parts of the books along with the page numbers
What is the index? Where is it located?
The alphabetical listing of key names, terms, and events with the page number. Located in the back of a book.
What is a heading?
Tells what each section of a CHAPTER is all about.
How does the glossary help the reader better understand the text?
The glossary define important words for the reader.
What kind of text provides a sequence of events or steps in a process? Some key words might include first, then, next, during, last, at the end.
Sequence/Chronological
What is a glossary?
1. It tells readers what they are going to read about in each section
2. It usually begins with a capital letter
3. It can be a short phrase, sentence, or question.
What are captions?
Describes what is being shown in pictures, diagrams, and graphs.
Why would an author include a timeline in their text?
To show how events took place.
What kind of text discusses similarities and differences? Some key words may include both, same as, similar to, on the other hand.
Compare and Contrast
What is a diagram?
A picture showing detail information; usually shows the step by step instructions or labeled parts of a picture.
Identifies important vocabulary words in text.
What is a legend/key?
Describes the meanings and colors and symbols on map.
Why might an author include a bar graph?
The author includes bar graphs to visually compare information or data.
What kind of text tells about a problem and looks for a solution? Some key words may include Therefore, as a result, issue, cause.
Problem/Solution
Which non-fiction text feature shows the part of an object? Sometimes it can show the inside of what an object looks like.

Why is a sidebar used?
To give the reader extra information on the topic that wasn't included in the text.
