A style of font that slants, used for emphasis, words in a foreign language, book titles, artwork titles, or ship names.
Italics
Gives a little more detail about the main idea.
Subtitle
An alphabetical list of specific topics that are in the book. It tells readers what page the topic is on, found at the back of the book.
Index
A chart that shows events in chronological order (the order in which they happen).
Timeline
A labelled picture or drawing that shows the parts of something or how it works.
Diagram
Symbols used to introduce items to a list.
Bullet Points
Tells the main idea of the passage.
Title
Helps readers identify key topics in the book and what page topics are on. Found in the front of the book.
Table of Contents
What are text features used for?
Items in a passage that help the reader understand the passage more easily.
Charts or graphs that help readers better understand the information in the text.
Graphics
Words near a picture or photograph that give more information about the image. Usually, 1-2 sentences long.
Captions
Defines words or adds extra information at the bottom of the page.
Footnote
A at the end of the passage that briefly restates what the passage was about.
Summary sentence
A visual representation of data, a visual depiction of information that is quick and easy to read.
Charts/Data
Shows the interrelations between two or more things and can be done in many different ways.
Graph
When a word is bold, underlined, or in italics, it is an important word for readers to know.
Special Print
Adds information that is somewhat related in a separate box, often fun and interesting.
Sidebar
A sentence that occurs at the beginning of the passage, it usually gives the reader a preview of the information in the passage
Topic sentence
