What is TGI?

TGI stands for Teen Grantmaking Initiative. It is a youth-led philanthropy program that takes community service to the next level. We take matters into our own hands by evaluating the most pressing needs facing youth in the community, and address them by fundraising and granting to nonprofit organizations who we decide are effectively serving youth.

What is one of the things you do with your community partner once the meeting starts (after you introduce yourself), before you get into the actual pitch?

Who/what are community partners?

Individuals from the community who volunteer to listen to a fundraising pitch given by TGI students in pairs. They are willing/interested in supporting you because they:

  • They listen to young change-makers

  • Learn about issues facing youth in Dearborn/Metro Detroit

  • Allow students to practice leadership skills

  • Become a donor for TGI

TGI students get trained and spend hours reviewing the grant applications we receive from local nonprofit organizations and decide who has the most effective youth-led projects that are empowering youth, and then award the money to them
