Imagine there are only two goods in the world, computers and shoes. Using all of its labor and capital, say the United States can make 30 million computers a year or 15 million shoes a year. Mexico can make 1 million computers or 10 million shoes. Do they trade and why?
Yes. This is called comparative advantage. For each shoe the U.S. makes, it is not making 2 computers.
Each shoe Mexico makes, it could instead make just 0.1 computer, because its really bad at making computers. So Mexico can make shoes for much cheaper, the U.S. can focus on making what it makes best, and buy each shoe for any amount less than 2 computers.
