What was so significance about Fort Sumter? What happened?

Fort Sumter was a federal for located in South Carolina. After South Carolina seceded from the Union it attacked the fort for about 34 hours. This attack is the incident that started the US Civil War.

What was the purpose of the Fugitive Slave Act? 

It gave Southern States the right to track down slaves that had fled to the north and return them back to their plantations. Those believed to be affiliated with the assistance in the slave's escape could be jailed.
