The name of this battle is misleading, it actually took place at Breed's Hill. The location was chosen because it was close to Boston, and the hill gave the Patriots an advantage. William Prescott a Patriot leader became famous for his quote, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." The British attacked three times, the Americans were able to push the British back twice, but on the third attack the Americans ran out of gunpowder and were forced to surrender.

Congress had the power to: declare war and peace, deal with other nations, print and borrow money, and organize new territories. Congress could not: regulate trade, set up an army, raise money on taxes, force the states to obey laws. The things that Congress could not do, created weaknesses in this document.

A document that describes how laws and decisions are made, and how the government works. This document divides the goverment into three branches: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. The three branches limit government power. This document also created a federal system (a system where there is a federal and state government). Federal government would have more power over the state government, and the state government would have more power over local governments. 10 amendements were made to this document, they became known as the Bill of Rights.

General Gage sent his British soldiers to destroy the Patriot's weapons and gunpowder. Upon hearing the news Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, and William Dawes went to warn the Patriots that the British were coming. Their ride became known as the Midnight Ride. Paul was captured and later released. The Patriots met Gage and his British soldiers, an unknown soldier fired a shot, beginning the battle. This shot was known as, "the shot heard 'round the world." The British were pushed back to Boston where they were met by more Patriot soldiers and militia. The Patriots hid behind trees and walls, shooting at the British soldiers as they marched to Boston. The British were trapped!

A compromise that stated that slaves did not count as whole people. A certain number of slaves could be considered whole people. This compromise was created because states wanted to recieve more representatives in Congress. The number of representatives each state had was based on each state's population, so some states wanted to count slaves as citizens, in order to have a higher population.

General Washington lead a surprise attack on the enemy camps at Trenton, New Jersey. The enemy was German mercenaries who were paid to fight for the British. Washington lead his men across the Delaware River on December 25, 1776. On December 26, the men reached Trenton. Washington took almost 1, 000 prisoners. This victory created hope for the Patriots, it made them believe that they could defeat the British.

A petition written by the Second Continental Congress that was sent to King George III. The petition was a last attempt by the Continental Congress to make peace with Britain. King George III did not read the petition, but instead sent more troops to Boston.

A brave officer who lead many attacks against the British in the Battle of Saratoga. He secretly changed sides, fighting alongside the British. He later became a British general. He became known as a traitor by the Patriots.

British General Cornwallis chose Yorktown as the location to fight the Continental Army. He chose Yorktown because it was a peninsula between the York and James Rivers. He thought that the rivers would allow British ships to deliever suppiles such as: food, clothing, and weapons. Washington heard of his plan and marched his men from New York to Virgina, and asked the French navy to block British ships from entering the harbor. Cornwallis was forced to surrender because he was out numbered and he could not get any more supplies. This victory marked the independence of the colonies from Britain. King George III later signed the Treaty of Paris, marking this independence.

This document was written by Thomas Jefferson. It was written in response to Thomas Paine's Common Sense pamphlet and Patrick Henry's "give me liberty or give me death," speech. The Second Continental Congress asked Jefferson to write it. The document was a statement that gave reasons why the colonies should be free from Britain and King George III's rule.
