What is the 5th amendment of the United States?

[No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime] - Right to remain silent, You cannot be forced to be a witness against yourself or confess to a crime.

[Nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb;] - Double Jeopardy: The government cannot try you twice for the same crime after an acquittal or conviction.


  • Grand Jury Indictment: A grand jury must decide if there is enough evidence to charge you with a serious crime.
  • Just Compensation (Takings Clause): The government cannot take private property for public use without paying fair market value.
