Chapter 1
An apostle of Christ Jesus and author of the letter to the Ephesians
Who is Paul (formerly named Saul of Tarsus)? (Eph 1:1a - Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God)
What you were in your trespasses and sins, in which you once walked
What is dead? (Eph 2:1-2a - And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world)
Through the gospel, these two groups had been brought together to form one new body in Christ
Who are the Jews and the Gentiles? (Eph 3:6 - This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel [aka Jews], members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.)
There is one God and Father of all who is over this
What is all or everything? (Eph 4:4-5 - There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.)
Ephesians 5:1 exhorts us as dearly loved children to follow this
What is God's example? (Eph 5:1-2 - Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.)
The first commandment with a promise
What is "Honor your father and mother"? (Eph 6:2-3 - “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”)
In love, God did this for us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ
What is predestined? (Eph 1:5-6 - He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.)
The English translation of the Greek word "sarx" which refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit
What is the flesh? (Eph 2:3 - All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.)
This person considered himself the least of all the Lord's people
Who is the apostle Paul? (Eph 3:8 - Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ)
Each of us have been generously given a gift through Jesus. It was prophesied that when Jesus ascended to heaven, he gave gifts to his people while taking up with him many of these
Who are captives? (Eph 4:8 - This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.")
According the apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:5, these types of people will not have any inheritance in the kingdom of God
Who are the sexually immoral or impure, or who are covetous or greedy (that is, an idolater)? (Eph 5:5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.)
Paul told them to "serve wholeheartedly, as if serving the Lord, not people"
Who are slaves? (Eph 6:5-8 - Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.)
The Holy Spirit is described as this guaranteeing our inheritance in God
What is a seal or a deposit? (Eph 1:13-14 - And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.)
According to Ephesians 2:5, because of what Jesus Christ has done, God gave us this
What is new life? (Eph 2:4-5 (NIrV) - But God loves us deeply. He is full of mercy. So he gave us new life because of what Christ has done. He gave us life even when we were dead in sin...)
In Ephesians 3:16-17, Paul prays that according to the riches of God's glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that this would happen
What is that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith? (Eph 3:16-17 - that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith)
The gifts given to the church are these
What are apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers? (Eph 4:11-12 - So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up)
In Ephesians 5:8, Paul encourages the believers to live as children of this
What is light? (Eph 5:8 - for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.)
Masters (and those with authority today) are to treat those who serve under them remembering that our Master does not show this
What is favoritism? (Eph 3:9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.)
For his audience to know the hope of God's calling, Paul prayed that this would be enlightened
What is the eyes of your heart? (Eph 1:18 - having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints)
For it is by this you have been saved through faith -- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
What is grace? (Eph 2:8 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God)
In Ephesians 3:18, Paul prays that they being rooted and established in love would have power together with all the Lord's holy people to hold onto this
What is how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ? (Eph 3:17b-18 - And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ)
According to Ephesians 4:29, you shouldn't let this out of your mouth
What is any unwholesome or evil talk? (Eph 4:29 - Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.)
Ephesians 5:18 exhorts us to not get drunk on wine but to be filled with this
Who is the Holy Spirit? (Eph 5:18-20 - And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ)
Ephesians 6:11 exhorts believers to put on this, so we can take a stand against the devil's schemes
What is the full armor of God? (Eph 6:11 - Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.)
Jesus is the head of this, which is his body
What is the church? (Eph 1:22-23 - And God placed all things under his [Jesus'] feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.)
Concerning the making of two groups one and destroying the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, Christ himself is our this
What is peace? (Eph 2:14 - For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility)
Paul concludes his prayer in chapter 3 with a benediction: "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be this forever and ever. Amen."
What is glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations?(Eph 3:20-21 - Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.)
According to Ephesians 4:31 - the things you should get rid of are these
What are all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice? (Eph 4:31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.)
The pattern for wives AND husbands is that the are to do this out of reverence for Christ
What is submit to one another? (Eph 5:20-21 - giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Paul concludes his letter with a benediction, sending these three blessings to the brothers and sisters, and all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love
What are peace, love, and grace? (Eph 6:23-24 - Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.)
