What happened on September 11th, 2001?
A series of coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. Nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, targeting the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. One plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew bravely fought back against the hijackers. The attacks resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths and had a profound impact on the United States and the world. (9/11)

Two white settlers enslaved and killed Pomos (a type of Native American). The Pomos rebelled and killed the enslavers causing a contingent of US soldiers and settlers, led by Lieutenant Nathaniel Lyon and Lieutenant J. W. Davidson to attack in retaliation. The Blood Lake Massacre is remembered as a tragic example of the violence against Native Americans that occurred in California during and after the Gold Rush era.
