Explain what the Missouri Compromise did.
Missouri’s application for statehood triggered an uproar. If that state were admitted, the balance between slave states and free states would be gone. The Missouri Compromise saved the day: Missouri would be admitted as a slave state, and a new state—Maine—would be created as a free state. To avoid future problems, they also mapped out which parts of the rest of America’s territory could become slave and free states. For almost 30 years, America kept the balance as more states joined the Union.
Why was the expansion of the railroad and the invention of the telegraph so crucial in the victory of the Union in the Civil War? Think about how they were used and what Lincoln did to gain a strategic advantage in the war with their use.
The expansion of the railroad and invention of the telegraph were key tools in the North’s victory of the Civil War. President Lincoln put both of these systems into use by the government for the war effort; he used the expansion of the railroad to transport supplies and soldiers to battlefronts in need, and he used the telegraph along with Morse Code to send messages to his military leaders using short quick messages. Additionally Lincoln put the entire Northern industry to work for the war effort (every factory was making something to contribute to the war). The South was at a strategic disadvantage in comparison. Its railroad system was not as expansive as it was in the North, and it was privately owned by various people, so the government could not use it to transport military goods and soldiers without consent from those owners. Additionally the South did not have extensive industry like the North, so it would run out of supplies and such sooner than in the North.

There are two types of ______________, describe the two types of ______________.
Due process; There are two kinds of due process. One has to do with what a law actually says. Laws must be fair and reasonable. The government cannot pass laws that unfairly limit people’s life, liberty, or property. The other type of due process has to do with how laws are enforced. Government officials must follow certain rules or procedures when they enforce laws. They cannot take away or limit someone’s life, liberty, or property without following those rules.
Describe who "Jim Crow" was, and how the term evolved to describe culture during the Civil Rights era.
Daddy Rice, a white actor, would cover his face with charcoal and then sing and dance in a silly way. This character’s name was Jim Crow. Just like we compare people to characters on TV, people began to use Jim Crow as a way to describe black people. (It wasn’t a compliment.) As time went on, the term was also used to describe any racist law that restricted the rights and opportunities of black people.
