Who was Dred Scott and what was his case? Why is he important? (Describe!)
Dred Scott was a slave from Missouri, a slave state, who moved with his master to Illinois, a free state. When Scott and his master returned to Missouri and his master died, Scott sued for his freedom because he had lived in places where slavery was illegal. Scott sued for his freedom in the Supreme Court, where he eventually lost; the Court ruled that he was not free and Scott returned to slavery. Dred Scott's case essentially meant that ALL slaves were property and location did not matter.
