The separatists founded this region of colonies in 1620.
What are the New England/North American colonies? The separatists wanted to remain "separate" from the Protestant Reformation ideals and came to the New World seeking the freedom to practice their religious ideals. The Pilgrims settled in Plymouth colony, which they called New England.

These colonies were established to find gold, but after not finding any, started to profit from tobacco.
What are the Southern colonies? The Virginia Company of London founded the colony of Jamestown, where settlers dug, washed, refined, and loaded gold - but it was actually gilded dirt! The southern colonies suffered harsh diseases (malaria) and harsh winters, and learned to harvest/use tobacco from the natives. The the wealthy settlers were unprepared for manual labor, and falling prices of tobacco and conflict with the natives led to Bacon's rebellion.

What is Bacon's Rebellion? Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia was the first popular uprising in the American colonies. Causes: Economic problems, high taxes, and conflicts with Native Americans. It was an early revolt against English tyranny, which culminated in the war for independence one hundred years later.

What is the House of Burgesses? It marked an important precedent because it allowed citizens to participate in government and make decisions.

The English empire did not grant political freedom - they instead had the policy of Salutary Neglect, and each colony ultimately reported to and profited for the Royal empire. The Dutch West India Company's Charter of Freedoms and Exemptions of 1629 offered Dutch wealthy Dutch investors large land grants (patroonships), government power (create civil and criminal courts, appoint local officials), and fur trade participation in exchange for settlers for the colonies (required 50 families within 4 years)

What is the Middle Passage?
These colonies were known for their uniform thinking and regular assemblies, as well as for relying mostly on trade, lumber, iron, and whale oil.

This country originally founded Manhattan, which was later bought and renamed New York.
What is the Netherlands/Dutch? The Dutch originally named the land Manhattan and the British purchased it and renamed it New York.
This region had two of the best ports in the colonies and relied on grain and livestock for profit.
What are the middle colonies? The northern colonies participated in small-scale agriculture, lumber, fishing, and trade, where the majority of shipments happened. But New York & Boston became two major ports in the middle colonies.
