It's predominantly for users who are color blind or the aging population but this is universally usable and really helps everyone

The informative part (could be all) of the component and the background on which it sits
Are logos always an exception to contrast minimum requirements?
No. If they are interactive elements on the page at least some part (even a border that is added around the logo) must meet or exceed contrast minimum requirements for components
What happened in 2015 that made Twitter blow up?
DAILY DOUBLE: NFL and Nike teamed up for "Color Rush". This Super Bowl used green for one team and red for the other team which created serious issues for fans who were color blind in recognizing the players for each team and following the game in general.

Can you pass Use of Color and still fail Contrast (Minimum) or vice versa?
Yes. These are 2 independent WCAG criteria. Although they work together they are tested and can be passed/failed separately.
What visual information can be added to inputs that are in error aside from color?
Icons, text, error messages, etc.

Opacity and weight
Is a data table that is not visually on the page and only for screen reader users considered a media alternative?
No, the textual information must be visual to be considered a media alternative.
