The reason Josh says this is because he saves him from having to do his free throws but only so he can go study and do education. He is glad that she is stopping him from the free throws but out of all things she makes him do school work which he doesn’t enjoy.

The Author wants us to know this because there dad might not be able to play basketball anymore due to him not getting the surgrey he needs. He got injured and because of that he has Patella Tendonitis and it prevents him from playing again if he don’t get the surgery.
