What is the most commonly used Bioluminescence color? Why?
Blue, because blue light travels best in water.
100
What is the furthest zone that light reaches?
The twilight zone, or the mesopelagic zone.
100
What is the main vessel used by the United States to explore the deep ocean?
Alvin
100
What are two of the organisms that thrive in the hadopelagic zone?
Sea stars, other echinoderms, tube worms
100
What are Mr. Ludwig's three childrens names?
North, Lola, and Ruby
200
What is the special organ that creatures use to produce light?
Photophores.
200
What is the other name for the epipelagic zone and why does it have that name?
The photic zone because that's where photosynethis happens.
200
When did Alvin make its first dive?
1964
200
What would happen to abyssopelagic organisms if they were brought to the epipelagic zone and why?
They would die because their bodies are used to an incredible amount of pressure.
200
What is Mr. Ludwig's favorite fish? (hint: we studied it recently)
SALMON!
300
List 4 uses for bioluminescence.
Warning, camouflage, navigation, mating, trap/hunting
300
What is the main food source for organisms in the abyssopelagic zone?
Marine Snow
300
What does ROV stand for?
Remotely Operated Vehicle
300
What method does the angler fish use to hunt its prey?
It dangles a luminescent light in front of its face and draws in fish to eat.
300
What sport did Mr. Ludwig play in college?
Basketball.
400
In what oceanic zone is bioluminescence most used?
The twilight zone, or the mesopelagic zone.
400
At what zone does the ocean reach a steady, never changing temperature?
Bathypelagic zone
400
Name three ways that humans can explore the ocean.
Scuba diving, Human Occupied Submersibles, ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles)
400
What zone is the farthest you will see a sperm whale dive to?
Bathypelagic zone.
400
What did Mr. Ludwig have in his sock when he was searched one time by the police?
A toothbrush.
500
Explain the chemical reaction that causes bioluminescence.
Luciferin is the chemical that creates the light and luciferase is the substance that catalyzes the chemical reaction. When these two chemicals are mixed in the presence of oxygen, light is produced.
500
What are the 5 major oceanic zones and list them in order.
Epipelagic (photic zone), Mesopelagic, Bathypelagic, Abyssopelagic, Hadopelagic
500
What is the deepest part of the ocean?
The Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean.
500
List 5 adaptations organisms need to live in the deep ocean.
Bioluminescence; no air spaces in body to avoid effects of pressure; incredible eyesight; specialized hunting techniques; buoyancy to move up and down the water column; lower metabolic rate; slower breathing rate; camouflage; food storage
500
What finger did Mr. Ludwig cut the tip off of and then put it back on?
