A red herring is something a mystery writer does to throw off the reader and build suspense. It could be a fake clue, fake suspect, etc. In the Diamond Mystery, a red herring was when Vivian Leander was wearing an expensive necklace even though her house had just burnt down and she supposedly had no money. This caused readers to question how she got the money to get a necklace like that.. stolen diamonds?

Luke smith was the one stealing the diamonds. He was using his apples and lunch time jog to smuggle the diamonds out of the store. He would place the diamonds in the apple, throw it out of the window, let it roll into the gutter which would lead to the apple falling down the drain pipe, and then Luke would pick up the apple on his jog. Then he would take it to the post office where he kept it in a locker.
