In the US independence is one of the our most valuable qualities. In most Italian families, independence isn’t really pushed at. Everyone is an extension of the family and “needing” one's family is normal and healthy. In the US we tend to put career and finances ahead of our spouse, children, siblings, and parents, whereas for most Italian families, family comes first no matter what.
