Define reinforcement.
Something that follows a behavior that makes the behavior more likely to occur in the future (Adams, 2000).
An SD is delivered before a desired response or behavior is emitted. This makes it a(n) ___ for the behavior.
Antecedent, because it comes before the behavior in question.
The "D" in SD stands for...
a. Discrete
b. Stimulus
c. Discriminative
C (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
SD stands for?
Discriminative Stimulus ( Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
Define EO's.
Differences in one's environment that can change the potency of reinforcers (or punishers) and how often certain behaviors occur (Poling, Lotfizadeh, & Edwards, 2019).
Why does an SD require an EO (Establishing Operation)?
EO's make reinforcers more potent, increasing the likelihood of a response (Poling, Lotfizadeh, & Edwards, 2019).
True or False: An SD is equivalent to an instruction.
False (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
An SD might commonly be mistaken for a(n)?
Instruction (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
Define SD
A stimulus that informs a learner that reinforcement is available (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
Why aren't instructions and SD's the same thing?
The same instruction can be used for several different skills, meaning the instruction alone is not prompting the behavior that will be reinforced (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021). For example, the instruction "Match" can be used to instruct a child to match blocks, cars, colors, and shapes. The blocks will prompt a child to match blocks, the cars, will prompt a child to match cars, etc.
A therapist arranges a field of three toys: a teddy bear, a car, and a football. The therapist then gives the learner the instruction "Find car". What is the SD?
a. "Find car"
b. Toy Car
c. The therapist
B ( Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
What type of behavior does an SD prompt?
Operant behavior (Axe & McCarthy‐Pepin, 2021).
