What are the different shapes of the Moon that are visible from Earth known as?
phases of the moon
100
How is one day on earth defined? The time it takes for _________
Earth to completely rotate around its axis once.
100
True or False. The moon is only visible at night.
False.
100
What is an extreme tide?
when the high tides are especially high and the low tides are especially low
200
What term defines a moon that is bigger than a half moon?
gibbous

Catherine and Noelle went outside and sat in the shade of a tree for a couple of hours. While they were there, the shade from the tree got smaller and smaller. Was it morning or afternoon? Explain how you know.
It was morning because the sun is getting higher in the sky, so there is less of an angle and the shadow of the tree gets smaller.
200
Using the calendar, predict the date of the next first quarter moon if there was a new moon on May 19.
May 26
200
What percent of the moon is always lit by the sun?
50%
200
Which causes the ocean's tides? a. Earth's revolution around the sun. b. the magnetic field between Earth's north and south poles c. the gravitational pull between Earth and the Sun and the Moon d. changes in atmospheric pressure
c. the gravitational pull between Earth and the Sun and the Moon
300
What is the difference between waxing and waning?
Waxing is when the moon is getting bigger, when the phases are changing from a new moon to full. Waning is when the moon is getting smaller, or changing from full back to new.
300
Which of the following results from the tilt of the Earth? Earth's tilt causes a. more daylight in summer than in winter b. a bulge at the equator c. a longer year every fourth year d. the phases of the moon
a. more daylight in summer than in winter
300
Using the calendar, if there is a full moon on May 9 and June 6, what phase is the moon in on May 23?
a new moon
300
About how long does one lunar cycle take?
29 - 30 days (a little less than a month)
300
How many high tides occur each day?
two
400
What is the relationship between daylight length and the Sun's angle?
They change together. As the Sun's angle increases, so does the length of the day. When the Sun's angle decreases, the days get shorter.
400
If Earth revolved more slowly in its orbit around the sun, which of the following would likely result? a. a longer year b. a longer winter c. a longer average day length d. both a and b would result e. all of the above would result
d. both a and b would result (a longer year and a longer winter)
400
What causes the phases of the moon?
the moon's orbit (revolution) around the Earth
400
Can there ever be two full moons in the same month? Explain your answer.
Yes; if there is a full moon on the first or second a month (that has 31 days in it), it is possible for there to be a second full moon on the 30 or 31 of that same month because the lunar cycle is only 29.5 days.
400
What is the relationship between extreme tides and the phases of the moon?
Extreme tides seem to occur when there is a full Moon and when there is a new moon.
500
Identify two similarities and two differences between rotation and revolution.
Rotation is the spinning of the Earth around its own axis, where as revolution is the orbiting of the Earth around the sun. One complete rotation defines a 24 hr. day-night cycle, where as one complete revolution defines a year. Both are movements of the Earth in which the Earth moves in a counterclockwise direction. Also, both movements mark time on Earth.
500
Explain how the position of the Earth causes warmer summers.
Because of the tilt of the Earth, during summer an area is facing the sun more directly. Thus, it receives more direct rays from the sun which results in warmer temperatures. In addition, being tilted towards the sun allows for longer days which further results in warmer temperatures.
500
Why can't you see a new moon?
Because its dark side is facing us. The moon is between the Earth and the sun, so the other side of the moon(the side we can't see) is being illuminated by the sun.
500
Diagram and name the eight steps in the lunar cycle.
new - waxing crescent - first quarter - waxing gibbous - full - waning gibbous - third quarter - waning crescent - new
