Sodium is more reactive. All elements want to have the same electron configuration as a noble gas. This allows them to have a full valence shell which makes them stable. Sodium has one valence electron and magnesium has 2. It is easier for sodium to lose its one V.E. than it is for Magnesium to lose 2 to be like Neon.
