What is a Haiku poem?
Humorous poem that has 5 lines with an aabb rhyming pattern
What is a limerick?
The action of repeating something that has already been said or written
What is repetition?
"The house was as clean as a whistle" is an example of this type of figurative language
What is a simile?
A term or phrase that cannot be understood by a literal translation, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is understood through common use (ex. "It's raining cats and dogs.")
What is an idiom?
The words of the poem are in the shape of the subject or outline the shape
What is concrete or shape poetry?
A poem based on a topic word written vertically-each line of poetry begins with a letter from the topic word
What is an acrostic poem?
A repetition of consonant sounds such as "the smooth, skaterly glide and sudden swerve." (from Robert Burleigh's poem, "Hoops")
What is alliteration?
The rhyme scheme which means that for every four lines, the first and third lines will rhyme with each other and the second and fourth lines will also rhyme with each other
What is an ABAB rhyme scheme?
The underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what lesson the author or poet wants us to take away from the poem
