Augustus likes to put cigarettes in his mouth but not light them because he believes that they don’t kill you unless you let them. He tells Hazel, “They don’t kill you unless you light them” (Green 20). Hazel believes that there are enough things that can kill you, why add to that list, but after Augustus explains why he does it, she understands.
