A cargo plan flies mysteriously over the community. We meet Jonas, he is nervous for the Ceremony of 12. They bring Gabriel home and Jonas recognizes Gabe's pale eyes. Jonas goes to the House of the Old and we see a moment of sweetness and tenderness, hearing "Release" for the first time. Jonas notices an apple that appears to have "changed." Afterward, they head to the Ceremony of 12, where everything is normal... until Jonas gets skipped. We then find out that he is to be the next Receiver of Memory. The crowd appears to have changed again. Jonas then receives a list of his rules, where he learns he cannot lie. Then, he goes to his first day of training where he receives a memory of "sled," "snow," and "uphill." Then, he experiences "sunburn. In the last thing we read, he notices Fiona's hair change too. The Giver reveals that he is beginning to see color, and then gives him the memory of a rainbow.
