She will receive new clothes with pockets indicating that she was mature enough  to keep track of her own small belongings.Eights are no longer allowed to have "comfort objects," like stuffed toys, and are expected to volunteer part of their time each day helping the adults in their professional roles, such as farming, engineering, and care-giving. The Ceremony of Eight is the first major milestone on the road to adulthood, as Eights begin to shed the symbols of childhood and integrate with the adults of the community.

At the Ceremony of Twelve, age no longer matters, as this is when individuals receive their Assignments and they become an adult . They move into the next stage of their lives as contributing members of the community

Jonas told his family that he had a dream where he was in a bathtub unlike the ones they are familar with. He was with Fiona.The details were murky but he remembered the feeling "the wanting".

Jonas got upset during the Ceremony of Twelve because he was skipped over for his Assignment. This was highly unusual and unexpected, causing confusion and distress for Jonas.

Caleb was  a replacement child. The couple had lost thier first Caleb at the age of 4 . Although the community is extremely safe , this child somehow wandered away  unnoticed. so this new baby was given the same name as if the first Caleb were returning .

Spouses are chosen for individuals by the Committee of Elders based on compatibility and various other factors  such as disposition, energy level , intelligence and interests determined by the community. The individuals themselves have no say in the selection process. (page 61)
