Who was Nick worried about? (chapter 8)
Gatsby (pg. 148 “ ‘You light to go away.’ I said. ‘It’s pretty certain they’ll trace your car.’)
(pg. 151) “She wanted her life shaped now, immediately-and the decision must be made by some force-of love, of money, of unquestionable practicality-that was close at hand.” What does this tell us about Daisy?
Throughout the book, Daisy rarely makes decisions and only lets other people make it for her. She said she wanted her life shaped now by some force, which means she doesn’t care what kind of force it is, whether it is love or money, she just wanted her life shaped. It also shows that she doesn’t care because either way her life would be okay and everything would be fine because she’s white. And because of all of this, it makes her a passive person.
What does Nick tell Gatsby to do? What is Gatsby’s response?
Nick tells Gatsby to run away and hide or else he would get caught. Gatsby refused to do so because he couldn’t bear leaving Daisy behind.
Did Nick sleep well that night? Why or why not? (chapter 8)
No, because a lot of things happened: the argument between Gatsby and Tom and Myrtle’s death.
What is Daisy's daughter a symbol of?
She represents how time is moving on and how things can change.
Why is Gatsby being so persistent in marrying Daisy?
Just like how Gatsby’s dream was to become wealthy and he achieved that by climbing the social ladder, he believes he could also get Daisy if he wished just as hard.
How does the conversation between Jordan and Nick end? How does Nick feel about Jordan now?
They broke off their relationship. Nick doesn’t care about her anymore.
What do Daisy and Myrtle each represent?
Daisy represents the wealthy classes and how they have more privilege than others. Myrtle on the other hand has to fight her way up.
Is Gatsby old money or new money? Old Money vs. New Money How does Tom feel about new money?
Gatsby is new money. Chp 6, pg. 107: “A lot of these newly rich people are just big bootleggers, you know.” Old money is the wealth that came from family connections or inheritance money.
Why do you think F. Scott Fitzgerald chose Nick to be the narrator?
I think it’s because of his middle class background and how he is between all of these events. He is able to show his thoughts between everything that is happening around him. And because he’s not judgmental, a lot of people expose their secrets to him so he knows a lot of things that most people don’t know.
(Not a question about Daisy) Whose face do you think is on the cover of the book? It doesn’t have to be the face, it can also be whose tears or eyes are those.
I believe the eyes are Doctor T.J. Eckleburg’s eyes because on page 23 it said, “The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic…They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a non-existent nose.” And then on page 24 it said, “The valley of ashes…The only building in sight was a small block of yellow brick sitting on the edge of the waste land…” I also believe the eyes are Daisy’s because the eyes are blue and have nude women in it. Blue eyes usually represent sadness and Daisy is sad about Tom’s affair with Myrtle and how she left Gatsby for Tom. The tears are kind of green which could symbolize the green light that Gatsby always looks at.
(pg. 149) “It excited him, too, that many men had already loved Daisy-it increased her value in his eyes.” What does this say about Gatsby?
It confuses me why Gatsby was so excited to see so many rich men in love with Daisy because he is poor and didn’t come from a wealthy background. He should’ve felt inferior and hopeless knowing that he would never win Daisy over. However because Daisy let him into her house alone with her, it probably boosted his confidence. This makes me think that Gatsby only thinks of Daisy as a prize that he needs to win.
