400: within a month from the start of the war, 1980, the iranian troops halted the iraqi forces in the desert. The so called “war of the cities,” in which the two sides bombed each other, caused an incredible amount of deaths. Iraq had a stronger army but iran had a larger population willing to become martyrs. Within two years, iran regained its land and cut off iraq’s access to the sea and 1984 we have trench warfare in the desert

foreign involvement
500: most of the foreign powers supported iraq because they feared and disagreed with iran’s revolutionary idea of shiite islam. Saudi arabia, egypt, small gulf states and jordan sided with iraq. Jordan also provided a port for iraqi imports and exports. Syria sided with iran because of its rivalry with neighbouring iraq and because it would recieve free iranian oil if it closed iraqi oil pipes which went to the mediterranean. France, Ussr, Germany and USA sided with iraq; france became the main supplier of weapons for iraq, while USA provided information on iranian troops movements and supplied the materials to produce chemical weapons. In 1986 and onwards USA provided protection for iraqi shipping and destroyed iranian navy, even as a retaliation for the attacks on the Kuwaiti navy
