Rockefeller started his company Standard Oil with all that he had and increased profits using horizontal and vertical integration. Carnegie followed in his mentors footsteps and used the Bessemer process to build a steel bridge across the Missouri river. Vanderbilt started in shipping and moved to railroads. All men were able to see what the future of industry was going to be and took a major risk investing in their ideas.
