What is a landform?
A landform is how the earth is shaped. There are many different kinds of landforms. Canyons, coasts, plain and mountains are all different kinds of landforms.
100
What kind of weathering is it when carbon dioxide in the air mixes rain to make a weak acid? The acid rain then breaks down the rocks when it rains.
chemical weathering
100
Name 3 things that live in soil.
worms, plant roots, bacteria, insects, fungi
100
Where along the earth's surface do earthquakes and volcanoes usually happen?
near places where earth's tectonic plates come together
100
What is this? An opening in Earth's crust where gases, ash, and molten rock can reach the surface.
a volcano
200
What is the outer layer of earth's surface called?
The crust
200
What kind of weathering is it when wind, water, or precipitation wears down the rocks and land formations?
physical weathering
200
What kind of soil am I? I am smooth and sticky. I can be red, grey or even slightly blueish. I absorb water into me.
clay
200
What is a fault?
a break or crack in rocks where Earth's crust can move suddenly
200
Why could a volcano eruption be bad for the environment?
The ash and particles absorbed into the atmosphere can alter the weather and can harm plants and animals who take in the air.
300
What is the middle layer of the earth's surface called? Hint: It is filled with hot magma.
the mantle
300
What is erosion? Describe it.
Erosion is when gravity, wind, water or ice move pieces of rock or dirt away to another place.
300
What kind of soil am I? I am rough and gritty. Water passes through me very easily. I can be tan, white, greenish or even black.
sand
300
Where is damage from an earthquake almost always the worst?
near the epicenter of the earthquake
300
What happens when an earthquake or volcanic eruption happens underneath the ocean?
it causes a tsunami, which is a series of huge waves of water
400
What is the hot, solid center of the earth called?
the core
400
What is deposition? Describe it.
Deposition happens after erosion. Once the rock or dirt is carried away, it has to end up somewhere. Deposition is when the dirt and rock gets laid down somewhere new and starts to pile up.
400
What kind of soil am I? I am usually a shade of brown. I hold water in me very well. I have humus in me, which is made up of dead plants and animals. I am perfect for growing crops.
silt
400
What device do scientists use to measure the intensity of earthquakes?
a seismograph
400
Name 3 possible causes for a landslide.
earthquake, volcano eruption, mining, construction, heavy rains
500
How thick is the earth's crust?
around 20 miles thick (although, the ocean's crust is only a few miles thick)
500
What are 2 tools that scientists could use to study erosion and deposition?
satellites, microscopes, chemical tests
500
What are some ways that farmers can replace the nutrients in there soil year after year?
fertilizer, manure, plowing the field, giving the field a break every so many years, growing different crops in the same field different years.
500
Why does a volcano erupt?
When earth's plates move, water can seep down into the earth. This water melts some of the rock and turns into hot magma. Since magma is lighter than solid rock, it starts to rise until the volcano finally blows!
500
What is the difference between magma and lava?
Magma is what the hot liquid is called when it is still inside the earth. Once the magma, comes out onto earth's surface, then it is called lava.
