What is the shape of the land, such as a mountain, plain, or plateau?
Landform
100
What are the three types of volcanoes and describe each one.
Active volcano -- Always has lava flowing Dormant volcano -- a "sleeping" volcano that may or may not erupt Violent eruption -- when a volcano destroys part of the montain
100
How are sedimentary rocks formed? What is an example of a sedimentary rock?
They are created from parts of rocks, shells, sand and other materials. They are carried into lakes and oceans by rivers and streams. The sediments sink to the bottom and are pressed and cemented tightly together.
100
Both natural gas and petroleum are formed from
a. dead plants b. dead organisms c. fuel d. plastic
100
The breaking apart of rocks is called
weathering
200
What is a mountain formed by hardened lava with an opening through which lava, ashes, rocks, and other materials may come out?
A volcano.
200
What are the three ways minerals are classified?
luster, hardiness, color
200
How are metamorphic rocks created? What is an example?
They are created by heat and pressure. Limestone, a sedimentary rock, is changed to a metamorphic rock called marble.
200
Riding your bike t the store helps conserve
a. trees b. gasoline c. steel d. paper
200
Large piles of windblown sand are called
Sand dunes
300
What is a crack in the earth's crust along which rocks move?
A fault.
300
How can you tell how hard a mineral is?
Rub the mineral against another mineral. The harder mineral will scratch the softer mineral.
300
What are the three types of landforms we have learned about in our science book?
Mountains Plains Plateaus
300
All of these are natural resources EXCEPT
a. plastic b. natural gas c. soil d. trees
300
Grass and clover are crops that are especially good for
a. preventing erosion b. breaking apart rocks c. building up soil d. building river mouths
400
What is nonliving, solid matter from the earth?
minerals
400
What are the three types of rock?
igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
400
What causes an earthquake?
When rocks move along a fault line. The ground shakes.
400
Another word for conserve is
a. reduce b. save c. replant d. use
400
Soil forms mostly from
a. rocks and minerals b. magma c. mineral deposits d. decaying animals and plants
500
The way a mineral reflects light.
Luster
500
How are igneous rocks formed? What is an example of an igneous rock?
Igneous rocks are made from magma that cools below the earth's surface. Granite is an igneous rock.
500
How are volcanoes formed?
Volcanoes form when heat and gases cause pressure to build up under the surface of the earth. When enough pressure builds up, the magma forces its way up through weak spots called vents. The magma then flows on the earth's surface, cools into lava, and then forms a mountain called a volcano!
500
List three ways people can conserve natural resources?
1. Turn down the heat 2. Ride your bike 3. recycle paper

a. settles in pools b. runs downhill c. is pumped out of wells d. stays in the soil
